Benefits of Upper Blepharoplasty Surgery

Upper Blepharoplasty Procedure

Before the surgery, Dr. Ramesh will help you prepare. Dr. Ramesh is an eyelid surgery specialist who has performed thousands of eyelid procedures. We will review your medical history and goals to decide if you are an ideal candidate. He will then take you through a physical examination and the following:

  • Complete eye examination, including measuring all the eyelid parts and tear production
  • Eyelid photography, which gives eye images from all angles to help plan the surgery. In addition, it can determine if there is a medical reason for the surgery that might be partially covered by insurance.
  • Visual field testing to help determine if there are blind spots at the corners of the eyes. These tests can help determine if portions of surgery might be covered by insurance.

The procedure begins with numbing of the skin to prevent pain and discomfort during the surgery. This is similar to getting local anesthetic at the dentist. Afterward, Dr. Ramesh will make tiny incisions on the upper eyelids to remove excess fat deposits and skin. He will sharpen the creases on both eyelids and remove excess skin, elevate the tissue, and leave enough for adequate eyelid closure.

Sometimes, he may have to remove a small amount of the orbicularis oculi muscle. He may preserve some fat in the middle of the eyelid, but removing some may help with aesthetic contour. After the procedure, he will close the eyelid with sutures and hide the incisions in the creases so that they become invisible after recovery.

How Does Upper Blepharoplasty Work?

Upper blepharoplasty corrects drooping eyelids, making your eyes look younger and more alert. It achieves this by removing excess skin and fat that may make your eyelids appear larger or heavy. However, there is a difference between upper blepharoplasty and brow lift. While upper blepharoplasty purely impacts the lids, a brow lift will lift the whole forehead through minimally invasive, keyhole incisions hidden in the hairline to improve the temples and shape of the eyebrow.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Upper Blepharoplasty?

Ideally, the ideal candidates for upper blepharoplasty are adults with droopy eyelids that want to open up the eyes and improve the overall appearance of the eye area. This procedure is right for you if you have sagging eyelids due to a buildup of fatty tissues under the skin. Furthermore, patients with obscured peripheral vision are ideal candidates.

Upper Blepharoplasty Recovery Process

After the procedure, you may have mild swelling or bruising for about 10 to 14 days. If that is the case, we will then advise you to avoid makeup during the recovery time, about two to three weeks. You may, however, wear glasses immediately but may have to wait for some time before you resume using contact lenses.

Upper Blepharoplasty Risks

The risks that may arise from upper blepharoplasty surgery are mild and disappear quickly. They include the following:

  • Bleeding and infection
  • Eyelid problems, including difficulty closing the eyes
  • Eye muscle injury
  • Skin discoloration
  • Temporary blurred vision and, in rare cases, loss of eyesight

Depending on your situation, we may advise on post-surgery care and arrange follow-ups to manage any complications that may arise.

Upper Blepharoplasty Procedure Results

After recovery, your eyelids will appear firmer and sag less. The initial puffiness will also diminish significantly. Moreover, your eyelids’ overall appearance will dramatically improve. The results can last for several years.
