Otoplasty
New Jersey

Otoplasty in New Jersey is a transformative procedure aimed at correcting various ear-related concerns, such as protrusion, shape irregularities, or congenital deformities. By reshaping the ear’s structure, Dr. Ramesh can enhance facial harmony and boost your self-confidence.

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a procedure that corrects protruding ears. This is one of the few surgical procedures suitable for children as young as six years of age. That’s because otoplasty is considered a reconstructive (rather than cosmetic) procedure — it treats an inborn deformity that can cause children significant self-consciousness, affecting their overall mental health.
Otoplasty treats two primary concerns related to protruding ears:

  1. The patient may have a conchal bowl, an extremely deep cup of the ear. Dr. Ramesh removes the cartilage responsible for the conchal bowl and adds sutures to reduce its depth.
  2. The patient may not have the antihelical fold, i.e., the prominently visible curved cartilage. Dr. Ramesh uses Mustardé sutures to deepen the antihelical folds and reduce ear protrusion.

What is post-surgery recovery like?

After otoplasty (ear surgery), you may experience mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the ears, which diminishes within the first week. Dr. Ramesh may recommend wearing compression garments to support healing and minimize swelling. Please follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions diligently, including avoiding strenuous activities and keeping the incision sites clean and dry. While most normal activities can be resumed within a few days, it’s crucial to refrain from activities that may put pressure on the ears or compromise healing. The following are some post-surgery recovery tips:

  • Rest and relax as much as possible
  • Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling
  • Apply cold compresses to alleviate discomfort
  • Take prescribed pain medication as directed
  • Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting
  • Follow a balanced diet to support healing
  • Keep the incision sites clean and dry
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments
  • Wear any recommended compression garments or dressings
  • Avoid sleeping on your side to prevent pressure on the ears

What can I expect from the otoplasty surgery?

Typically performed under local or general anesthesia, otoplasty in New Jersey begins with incisions made behind the ear to access the cartilage. Dr. Ramesh may reshape the cartilage to create a more natural contour, correct protrusion (ear pinning), or reconstruct missing folds. Following cartilage manipulation, Dr. Ramesh secures the newly shaped ear using internal sutures, ensuring long-lasting results. Finally, the incisions are carefully closed, leaving minimal scarring that is discreetly hidden behind the ear’s natural folds.

How long do the otoplasty results
last?

The results of otoplasty surgery are typically long-lasting, providing a permanent improvement in the appearance and functionality of your ears. While individual experiences may vary, most patients can maintain their enhanced ear aesthetics for years or even permanently. However, certain changes can occur over time due to the natural aging process. Otoplasty FAQs

What’s the ideal age for otoplasty?

Otoplasty in New Jersey is suitable for children six years of age and above. That’s because children’s ears are usually developed to at least 90% of their adult size by age six. Furthermore, children start experiencing social problems and bullying because of “different” or protruding ears at an extremely young age, affecting their overall social development. This is typically why children would receive otoplasty (ear pinning). However, otoplasty isn’t medically necessary, so it’s not advisable for children who aren’t bothered about their ears.

Is otoplasty safe?

Otoplasty is a safe procedure with a perfect success rate and no major risks of complications. Otoplasty for children is performed under general anesthesia so they’ll be asleep through the procedure. Otoplasty for adults is performed under local anesthesia with sedation.

Does otoplasty leave visible scars?

Our otoplasty in New Jersey doesn’t leave visible scars because the surgeon makes the incisions behind the ears. The small scars are perfectly hidden behind the ears and in the natural folds of the skin.

What is recovery like after otoplasty?

Like all surgeries, patients may experience mild swelling, redness, and bruising after otoplasty in New Jersey. The bruising and swelling will gradually fade away after 1 to 2 weeks. You’ll also have to wear a dressing over the ears for five days. However, most normal activities can be resumed in a day or two, and you can be socially ready within a week.

Does otoplasty affect hearing?

No, otoplasty doesn’t affect hearing.

How much does Otoplasty cost?

The cost of otoplasty surgery will vary based on factors like procedure complexity, patient desired outcome and other factors. Please schedule a consultation with our surgeon so we can provide a personalized quote for you.
